26 January 2016, HOW organized the second workshop entitled “Detecting Signs and Marks of Torture”, the workshop was attended by doctors working in the clinics of the Reform and Rehabilitation centers and the detaining centers in the Gaza Strip, in addition to the directors of the emergency departments of governmental hospitals.
Mr. Frederic Maio, the director of DCAF office in Palestine, welcomed the attendees and talked about the leading role of DCAF center in developing the security sector in the Gaza Strip.
Dr. Jeanpierre Restellini, the former commissioner general of Switzerland and a member in the European Union for preventing torture and inhuman treatment, talked about the role of doctors in preventing torture, collecting sufficient information of the patient’s past pathologies, detecting the visual casualties resulted from torture, and conducting medical diagnoses. In addition, he talked about the importance of building trust with patients and the recognizing sorts of external and internal casualties and many related topics.
At the end of the meeting, there was an open discussion and a presentation for some cases faced by the clinics doctors in Gaza. Finally, it is important to mention that this workshop comes within a series of awareness workshops and lectures organized by the House of Wisdom, in order to develop the security sector in the Gaza Strip.
